Born (1891) in Bruhl, Germany - (painter/graphic artist) Max Ernst is considered to be one of the primary pioneers of both the Dada and Surrealist movements during the 1920s and 1930s.

Ernst interest in painting was initially sparked when (at the age of 18) he had visited an asylum in Bonn where he closely observed the artwork of the mentally ill patients.

Neatly compiled (with biographical text) by Werner Spies - This glossy book of 300 pages gives you a good overview of Ernst's artwork throughout his lifetime.

*Note* - In 1976 - Max Ernst (84 at the time) died of a heart attack.
